NORTH ADAMS — Families who will need a little help supplying their children with gifts and/or warm clothing have until Monday to register for the BCAC Elf Program.

According to Aleta Moncecchi, deputy director of the Northern Berkshire County branch of Berkshire Community Action Council, people should visit the North Adams office at 85 Main St., Suite 201 or the Pittsfield office at 1531 East St.

The BCAC Elf program allows families who meet the criteria to register and list what sort of warm clothing their children need and their sizes, and any gift the child might enjoy. It is meant for children up to age 12.

Last year 2,000 children were served by the Elf program, Moncecchi said.

BCAC is still seeking people to sponsor a child or a family. The sponsors select an applicant and fill the needs list for an individual child, or a family of children.

With the closing of the North Adams Regional Hospital last year, Moncecchi noted that the need in North County is definitely more acute.

"This program is important because we have so many children without the basic clothing during the cold winter months," Moncecchi said.

As part of the Elf program, donors can also bring in any gently used and no longer needed winter coats to the North Adams BCAC office, which BCAC clients will be able to choose from to help keep family members warm this winter.
