GREAT BARRINGTON >> A Sheffield man has been sentenced to a year in jail for assaulting a woman after an evening of drinking.

Anthony W. Errichetto III, 40, of South Main Street, the woman were at the Veterans of Foreign Wars bar on South Main Street on Nov. 13, when the woman suggested they leave at a little past 9 p.m., according to Great Barrington Police.

The victim said Errichetto became visibly upset, asking why they should leave since they were having a good time. The argument escalated, the woman said, as they left the bar and walked to the parking lot. Errichetto suddenly began striking the woman, and an employee of the VFW, who was watching the encounter, notified police.

The woman told police that Errichetto, after striking her several times, jumped on her while she was on the ground and smashed her head violently into the ground. The victim reported to police that she believes her head was slammed into the ground twice, but that her memory was "hazy" after the first two times.

When Officers Paul Storti and Christopher Peebles arrived, Errichetto ran from the parking lot into an adjacent field. They gave chase and Errichetto was apprehended soon afterward.

As he was handcuffed, police reported, Errichetto was weeping and apologizing for his behavior.

Errichetto was found guilty in Southern Berkshire District Court to one count each of assault and battery on a family member and assault with a dangerous weapon, for slamming the woman's head into the ground.

Judge Paul Vrabel sentenced him to a year in the Berkshire County Jail and House of Correction.
