GREAT BARRINGTON >> A spokesperson from Baystate Medical Center reported on Friday morning that longtime town moderator and Deputy Fire Chief Edward G. McCormick is now in "good" condition, after he collapsed Thursday morning while participating in the annual Turkey Trot Run at Bard College at Simon's Rock on Thursday morning.
According to Fire Chief Charles Burger, firefighters Marc Palumbo and Christopher Nelson immediately began CPR at the scene, along with a nurse who was also at the annual event.
The Southern Berkshire Volunteer Ambulance Squad and personnel with the Great Barrington Police Department responded and managed to restart McCormick's heart with a defibrillator and intravenous drugs, Burger said.
McCormick, 68, was transported to Fairview Hospital where he was stabilized and regained consciousness, the chief said, before he was later transported to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield.
In addition to being a firefighter for more than 50 years and town moderator for many years, McCormick is managing partner of the law firm, McCormick, Murtagh & Marcus.
Said Fire Chief Burger, "The McCormick family along with the Great Barrington Fire Department would like to thank the emergency responders and medical professionals for saving his life with excellent care. We wish Deputy McCormick a rapid and full recovery."
