PITTSFIELD — A city man wanted for allegedly assaulting and beating a woman in mid-December was apprehended Wednesday when he was found unconscious behind the driving wheel of a running car.

Russell J. Allison, 42, faces at least nine charges including assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, indecent assault and battery on a person over 14, possession of heroin, and possession of cocaine with the intent to distribute.

Allison is scheduled for an arraignment and a dangerousness hearing in Central Berkshire District Court on Tuesday.

According to court records, police were dispatched to Berkshire Medical Center about 2 a.m. Dec. 14 for a report of an assault.

Police spoke to the victim who alleged Allison took her cell phone and beat her for three hours inside his home.

Allison forced her to disrobe, punched her in the face and kicked her repeatedly, spit on her, whipped her with a belt, and took a set of clippers and cut her hair before ordering her to get dressed and leave, according to court records.

The woman then walked herself to the hospital, according to police.

Police said the woman had welts on her neck, back, legs and arms, as well as a split lip and swollen nose, among other injuries.

Police went to Allison's home to place him under arrest, but he was not there, prompting police to issue a warrant.

Then, just before 8 a.m. Wednesday, police were dispatched to Cherry Street for a report of a man passed out inside a car.

Police found Allison unconscious behind the wheel, with his foot on the brake and the car still in gear in the middle of the northbound lane.

Police rousted Allison, who pulled the car over and was subjected to a search, but first identified himself to police as David Smith.

Police found about $1,000 in cash and drugs including 7.8 grams of cocaine, some of which appeared to be packaged for sale.

Police also found a backpack containing a purse, shoes and jacket with store security devices and price tags still attached.

Between the two incidents, Allison faces charges of assault and battery, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (two counts), larceny from a person, indecent assault and battery on a person 14 or over, possession of cocaine with intent to distribute (subsequent offense), possession of a Class A drug (heroin), receiving stolen property valued over $250, and use of a motor vehicle without authority.
