PITTSFIELD — An Adams man, who police saw "roll out of the vehicle" during a traffic stop, is being held without bail on an allegation of a fifth drunk driving charge.
Police said Steven Cote, 45, of East Hoosac Street, was spotted driving a Honda Civic with a flat tire on South Church Street in North Adams at about 6:20 p.m. on Dec. 11.
Police said Cote was driving at 25 mph northbound on South Church Street. Police followed until the car stopped abruptly soon after.
Police said Cote had difficulty getting out of the vehicle and saw him "stumble into the northbound lane" when he did so.
When asked for his license, Cote said he had none.
Police found an open and crushed Miller Lite can in the car and another open can in the car's beverage holder.
The front end of the car was damaged and the right front tire was nearly gone, according to police.
Cote said he was traveling from East Hoosac Street in Adams to East Quincy Street in North Adams.
According to court files, Cote failed two field sobriety tests and refused a third, telling police to "just take me."
Police later found part of a fender they believe came from the Honda Cote was driving, but could not locate the spot where the damage may have occurred.
The owner of the Honda was contacted and told police Cote did not have permission to use the car, but declined to file a stolen vehicle report.
Cote was arraigned in Northern Berkshire District Court on Dec. 14 and, following a dangerousness hearing, was ordered held without bail until April 8.
His case was moved into Berkshire Superior Court, where he was arraigned Monday on charges of operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol (fifth offense), negligent operation of a motor vehicle, operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol with a license suspended for an operating under the influence offense. and possession of an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle.
Cote will continue to be held without bail pending a hearing on April 8.
The investigation was conducted by members of the North Adams Police Department.
