PITTSFIELD >> The Gladys Allen Brigham Community Center has announced the student winners of its 30th annual Real Women Essay Contest.

"I think the Real Women Essay Contest is a great opportunity for participants to learn about an amazing woman in their families, communities or history," said Sarah Gillooly, who chairs the contest.

In addition, she said, the contest helps to strengthen students' reading, writing and listening skills, and increases their knowledge and understanding about other cultures, struggles and successes.

"The Real Women Essay Contest is our unique way of celebrating women's history month with literacy. It is our yearly tribute to women's contributions in Berkshire County and beyond," Gillooly said.

The winners will be honored at an awards celebration, to be held at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 30, in the Boland Theater at Berkshire Community College. The event, which is free and open to the public, will feature guest speaker Ty Allan Jackson, a local author and entrepreneur, and will be emceed by Christa Collier, executive director of Berkshire County Kids' Place.
