PITTSFIELD >> When police with a warrant broke down the door of a West Street home Tuesday night, they reportedly found cash, cocaine, PCP and suspect Rashard Garnett holding his 3-year-old son in his arms.
Garnett, 27, was ordered held on $5,000 bail on charges of drug possession, conspiracy, and committing a drug crime near a school or park.
Members of the Berkshire County Drug Task Force executed the search warrant about 8:50 p.m.
After receiving no response from inside the home after announcing their presence three times, police breached the door.
Garnett and a co-defendant — who has yet to be arraigned on similar charges — were inside the home and agreed to speak with police.
A second child, age 6, was also in the house at the time.
Assistant Berkshire District Attorney Veronica LeClair said she believes both children are in the custody of the Department of Children and Families.
Garnett said there was no cocaine in the house, but he had some on him.
A search recovered about two grams of crack cocaine hidden in Garnett's underwear, according to court files.
Police found two bottles which they believe contained PCP, or Phencyclidine, an illegal drug.
One of the bottles may have been thrown into one of the children's bedrooms before police entered, causing the cap to come loose and contaminate parts of the floor and items in the room including toys, clothing and stuffed animals.
Police collected those items into garbage bags to be destroyed, according to court records.
Police found about $2,657 in cash, including a marked $20 which investigators used in a controlled purchase of crack cocaine from Garnett before the execution of the search warrant, according to court files.
Several cell phones, a scale and other dealer paraphernalia were also recovered in the search, according to police.
Garnett pleaded not guilty in Central Berkshire District Court to charges of possession of a Class B drug with intent to distribute (subsequent offense), conspiracy to violate drug laws, and committing a drug violation near a school or park.
Garnett's bail was set by Judge William Rota and he is due back in court on April 19 for a pretrial hearing.
