NORTH ADAMS — Everyday Health confirmed on Friday that it intends to close its downtown North Adams office this month, but it will retain most of its employees.
The online health and wellness media company, headquartered in New York but with a location on Marshall Street for more than a decade, expects to close the office by the end of the month.
Those who stay on will work from home, and the company will help them make that transition, according to Melanie Goldey, Everyday Health's senior vice president of strategic planning and investor relations.
Goldey declined to identify how many employees worked at the North Adams location, but said it was less than 10 percent of the company's workforce.
Everyday Health provides health-related content through a variety of platforms including mobile and tablet applications. The company's website says its strategy is "designed to provide consumers and health care professionals with access to the most trusted health and wellness content tailored to meet their daily needs."
But the company is putting less focus on its online subscription services to personalized dietary and fitness programs, which the North Adams office had a large role in supporting.
"[The move is] mostly related to a plan to wind down our consumer subscription business," Goldey said.
Headquartered in New York, Everyday Health also has offices in Chicago, Washington, D.C., and Mumbai. It's North Adams office employees primarily handle customer service operations, according to the company's website.
It was founded in 2002 under the name Waterfront Media. As a young start-up, then known as Agora Media, it merged with the struggling Internet company Streetmail.com, saving jobs for a handful of employees of the North Adams business. The company moved to Mass MoCA that year and has maintained a presence in downtown North Adams since 2007.
