PITTSFIELD — A city man is being held without bail for allegedly throttling a pregnant woman and pushing her down the stairs on Sunday afternoon.
George Pinel, 27, of Pomeroy Avenue, was arrested after police broke down the door to the bathroom, where he had locked himself in, according to court records.
When police arrived at the home, the door was locked and they could hear a woman screaming "help me" and what sounded like someone on the other side of the door being punched or slapped and a loud "thud" as if someone had been thrown against a wall.
The woman said she and Pinel had gotten into an argument during which he threatened to "take care" of an abortion himself, if she didn't get one and threw objects like water bottles and knives at her and attempted to douse her face with hydrogen peroxide.
Pinel allegedly went upstairs in the Lincoln Street home and when the woman followed, she was pushed down the steps, hitting each on the way down, the report said.
When she composed herself and attempted to go upstairs again, Pinel allegedly grabbed her by the throat and dragged her upstairs before pushing back down once again.
Pinel allegedly locked the door to the home and told the woman not to open it once police began knocking, prompting them to force the door open.
Pinel allegedly told the woman, "I'm not going to let you go."
Once police forced their way in, the woman ran outside, and Pinel locked himself inside a bathroom. Police broke down the door after Pinel ignored several opportunities to come out on his own.
He allegedly resisted police efforts to place him into the cruiser, prompting an officer to strike the back of his knees in order to get him inside the vehicle.
Pinel pleaded not guilty in Central Berkshire District Court on Monday to charges of assault and battery of a pregnant victim, strangulation or suffocation of a pregnant victim and intimidation of a witness.
He is due back in court on Wednesday for a dangerousness hearing, which will determine if bail should be set and in what amount.
