PITTSFIELD — A Connecticut man accused of running a drug dealing operation out of a Lincoln Street apartment is facing cocaine trafficking and heroin distribution charges.

Michael Martin, 34, of West Hartford, was in possession of up to $11,500 worth of cash and drugs when police conducted a raid at 79 Lincoln St. about 9:40 p.m., according to court documents.

Police had obtained search warrants to search one of the apartments in that building as well as Martin's 2009 Nissan Altima.

Officers announced their presence three times with no answer, prompting them to break down the door to the apartment, believed to be a base of operation for drug distribution in the area.

Inside, police found Martin, who was allegedly slow to comply with showing officers his hands and continued to back away.

He appeared to be reaching into the rear of his waistband while backing up until he tripped over his feet and fell to the ground at which point he raised his hands and was taken into custody.

Underneath Martin, police found a plastic bag containing 45 individual packages of crack cocaine and 19 bags of heroin. A digital scale, three cellphones and other dealer paraphernalia also were found.

A search of the car yielded 50 bags of heroin, $1,860 in cash and a bag with approximately 29.8 grams of powdered cocaine.

Police said $140 of the recovered money was marked by investigators and used in controlled purchases of drugs during the investigation.

The combined weight of the cocaine was estimated at 37.5 grams and the combined value of the cash and narcotics between $8,000 and $11,500.

Martin told police he "only smoked weed."

He pleaded not guilty in Central Berkshire District Court on Tuesday to charges of cocaine trafficking, possession of a Class A drug (heroin) with intent to distribute (subsequent offense) and committing a drug violation within 300 feet of a school.

Judge William Rota ordered him held on $15,000 bail and set a pretrial hearing for April 20.
