DALTON >> In seeing signs and billboards of the Berkshires heralding April as Autism Awareness Month, Jeannie Compter has been inspired to do her part to reach out to people with autism in the community.

Throughout the month, Compter, who owns 2 Flights Up, a dance studio and community center at 399 1/2 Main St., will offer free line dancing lessons to people with autism and their accompanying family members from 4 to 5 p.m. Tuesdays. Compter said she will also be fundraising throughout the month at the studio to help area organizations that support children with autism.

The studio has worked previously with students who have limited mobility, and Compter said she's welcome to have people come who just want to get out of the house and try something new.

"I just felt like I needed to do something, so I decided to reach out to see if there's something I can do to make a better world," she said.
