PITTSFIELD >> Residents of homeless shelter on upper North Street had to flee the building Monday evening following a small fire in one of the bedrooms, according shelter staff.

Around 6:20 p.m., the Pittsfield Fire Department responded to a report of a fire at Barton's Crossing. An unknown number of people staying at the shelter escaped unharmed, said the shelter's director Erin Forbush.

"We have drills and protocol for this and the staff followed them," she said.

While the resident were still milling about outside Barton's Crossing two hours after the fire broke out, Forbush expected every to return shelter for the night.

Firefighters quickly had the fire out, but what caused it remains under investigation.
