WILLIAMSTOWN — As it turns out, a college town is a pretty good place to open a pizza place.
Steve Peltier quietly opened Pelty's Pizza in the Colonial Plaza last month, and the delivery side is ramping up quickly — especially between 1:30 and 3 a.m. on weekends for hungry Williams College students.
And college sports events also are bringing in plenty of business.
"A visiting rugby team called in the other day and they ordered a boatload of grinders," Peltier said. "We cooked them up, packed them all into a car and drove them over to Cole Field. The players just loved it."
Peltier, who has lived in Williamstown for most of his life, and his family are well-known in the community. He named the new business after his son, Sean "Pelty" Peltier, who worked as a firefighter and EMT in Williamstown for several years and is now a firefighter in Connecticut.
He also has a daughter, Cassie; His wife, Denise passed away in 2012.
Peltier is working to fill the void left after Colonial Pizza closed abruptly last year. Working with the property manager, Peltier revamped the former restaurant, brought the space up to current building code, and redecorated. And of course the original equipment had to be tested, which resulted in some repair work.
After his March 13 opening, Peltier already has persevered through unexpected equipment issues and a quickly growing demand for more food.
"We've overcome and we've had some really good days," he said. "And word is getting out."
He was hoping to make the dining space welcoming to allow him to expand on the dine-in business.
"People come in and sit and talk, and they tell me the new dining room is warm and inviting," Peltier said. "We have more folks coming in and hanging out and that's good. That's what we like."
Getting the place open was a labor of love for Peltier and his family. Many of his friends joined in the struggle as well.
"Lots of friends put in a lot of effort on this, and if it weren't for them this just wouldn't have happened," he said. "And that bodes well, because I want Pelty's Pizza to be part of this community — and I want to do something for the community that has done so much for me and my family."
And then there was the support he felt from others.
"Every week someone was saying, 'You gotta open, you gotta open,' " he said. "There was so much encouragement. And since we opened the response has been great."
Peltier has lots of experience working at Williams Inn, in just about every department, for years. He was also working for the facilities department at MCLA for quite some time.
But knowing that running a pizza shop is normally a 70- to 80-hour work week, he left his other jobs to concentrate on his new place.
Pelty's serves a wide variety of pizzas, grinders, gyros, calzones, wraps, wings, pasta and salads.
With nine employees so far, deliveries and dine-in services are growing, and they will soon start to see the catering end of things kick in, Peltier said.
Mostly, though, he's relieved to be open and serving good food to good people.
"This is home," Peltier said. "This is where I want to be. It's a wonderful area with a lot of great people. Why would I ever want to leave?"
