A total of 13,000 pounds of non-perishable food donated last month will help to provide food for more than 1,800 individuals and families in Central Berkshire County.
Local branch No. 286 of the National Association of Letter Carriers and Postal Workers held its Letter Carriers Food Drive in Central Berkshire County on May 14, with volunteer and coordination support from members of Berkshire Youth United, Berkshire Community Action Council and Berkshire United Way.
Participants placed their food donations in bags or boxes by their mailbox and letter carriers picked them up on their daily route. Donations were then brought to the Pittsfield Post Office, where 25 volunteers helped weigh the food and distribute it to 15 food pantries and meal programs.
Pets get donations
Herberg Middle School's state-funded 21st Century Community Learning Centers' Community Connection service-learning group recently held a pet supply drive in efforts to support the two animal shelters in Pittsfield.
With guidance of teachers Beth Trainor and Dorothy McGurn, eight students were able to collect dozens of packages of pet food, cat and dog toys, and cleaning supplies, which were delivered to the Berkshire Humane Society and Eleanor Sonsini Animal Shelter.
