NORTH ADAMS — About a month after its former director announced he would step down, the Northern Berkshire United Way on Tuesday announced an interim replacement.

Gerald Desmarais, previously a board member of the nonprofit for more than 15 years and the former treasurer for the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, will take the reins on Monday, June 27.

Former director Joseph McGovern announced in May that he would leave the Northern Berkshire United Way to become executive director of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Harford County in Aberdeen, Md. He served as the United Way director for six years.

Desmarais recently retired after a 40-year career at the college, which included stints not only as treasurer but as the director of admissions and director of financial aid, according to a press release issued Tuesday by the Northern Berkshire United Way.

"It is an honor to serve the Northern Berkshire United Way Community as interim director," Desmarais stated. "The agencies do an outstanding job in providing services to our families, neighbors, and individuals in need. Through our contributions and support, they will continue to meet the increasing demands of our region."

There are some 20 member agencies that comprise the Northern Berkshire United Way, spanning from the Northern Berkshire Community Coalition to Child Care of the Berkshires and more.

"His wealth of organizational knowledge coupled with his professional credentials will be an incredible asset to us during this transition," said Amy Giroux, the board president of the Northern Berkshire United Way, in the press announcement.

The board also noted that it has posted the position and will continue its search for a full-time replacement over the summer months while Desmarais oversees the operation.

The executive director position has been posted online and the deadline to apply is July 14. The position requires, among several attributes, "five-plus years in non-profit management and successful fundraising plans and results."
