A storm system pushing across New York state has prompted a National Weather Service tornado watch, in effect until 10 p.m. Friday in Berkshire County as well as Bennington and Windham counties in southern Vermont.

The tornado watch also covers 15 counties in eastern New York, including the Capital District, Columbia and Rensselaer counties and south into the Catskill region and the Hudson Valley.

The Climate Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma, issued the advisory shortly before 2 p.m. It means that conditions could create the possibility of a tornado amid strong to severe thunderstorms fueled by warm, moist air creating a volatile atmosphere.

"These storms will be capable of producing damaging wind gusts along with hail and flooding downpours," AccuWeather Meteorologist Steve Travis stated.

The National Weather Service in Albany, N.Y., predicted that the thunderstorms could contain damaging winds and large hail from mid-afternoon into the evening.
