ADAMS — A Pittsfield man was killed Thursday morning when the car he was driving crashed into a flatbed tow truck on Howland Avenue.

Ethan Piaggi-Cornell, 23, was driving a 2001 Hyundai Sonata around 11:15 a.m. when he struck the rear end of the truck, which had stopped to make a left turn into Gene's Sales and Service, according to Adams Police Chief Richard Tarsa.

He was taken to the North Adams Campus of Berkshire Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, according to the Berkshire District Attorney's Office.

The driver of the truck was uninjured, police said. There were no passengers in either vehicle.

An autopsy will be conducted at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Holyoke.

Howland Avenue was closed for several hours while investigators processed the scene.

The investigation is being conducted by members of the Adams Police Department, the Berkshire Detective Unit of the State Police assigned to the District Attorney's Office, the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis Reconstruction Section and the Massachusetts State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section.
