A Pittsfield man is recovering from undisclosed medical troubles at a Springfield hospital after being rescued over the weekend while hiking in extreme heat in southern New Hampshire.
Brian Bissell, 54, was on the White Dot Trail on Monadnock Mountain, halfway between Keene and Jaffrey, N.H., around 1 p.m. Saturday, when he suffered a medical emergency, according to local authorities.
Fire and emergency medical personnel from several surrounding communities and Monadnock State Park responded to a 911 call from the scene, where a registered nurse and other hikers with medical training came to Bissell's aid.
Once stabilized, rescuers brought Bissell down the mountain, nearly three hours after being stricken. He was flown by UMass Lifeflight helicopter to Bay State Medical Center, where he was reported in stable condition Monday afternoon.
