WILLIAMSTOWN — The Green River is expected to receive a pre-fall cleaning next weekend.

Hoosic River Watershed Association members will team up with members of the South Williamstown Community Association to pluck glass, metal, cans and other debris from the river. The public is invited to participate with the cleanup.

Stephen McMahon, executive director of the watershed association, said many people use the river and it is vital to maintain a clean, safe waterway.

"We don't want all that stuff floating around in there," he said.

The Green River course was altered slightly during Tropical Storm Irene in 2011, he said, and that allowed the river to shift closer to an old dump site along Route 7 near Harts Trucking Co. property. The matter was investigated by town and state officials, according to information provided by the watershed association, and it was agreed that a cleanup would benefit the river.

On Sept. 1, about 20 members of the Williams College Class of 2020 are expected to assist with the watershed association members and North Branch Nursery employees in planting about 1,000 trees and shrubs at the former Spruces Mobile Home Park site.

There will be 10 students participating with a morning session and 10 others participating during the afternoon, according to information provided by the watershed association.

The Spruces sustained major damage during Tropical Storm Irene and every resident was ultimately displaced and relocated, and the park was permanently shut down.

The plantings are the first improvements to the vacant site since the final residents left in 2014. The tress and shrubs will be planted along a 500-foot swale near the front of the property. The Spruces Land Use Committee and town maintenance services also are participating with the project.

Town employees will mow the area prior to the plantings and town officials are contributing mulch, according to watershed association information.

The planting initiative is funded with revenue from the Community Preservation Act.
