GREAT BARRINGTON — Keeping in the spirit of the theme "Laughter is the Best Medicine," actor/comedian Paul Reiser will headline next month's Fairview Hospital 2016 Gala.
The actor is best known as the driving force behind the hit sitcom "Mad About You," which he co-created, produced, and starred in for almost a decade.
"We're in our 16th year of the gala," said Lauren Smith, director of community relations and development for the hospital. "Many people are involved, at many different levels."
The gala, which is a benefit for the hospital, will be held at 8 p.m. Sept. 24 at the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center in Great Barrington.
The Fairview Hospital Gala began in 2000 as a dinner-dance format at Berkshire School. In 2008, the event moved to the Mahaiwe theater in downtown Great Barrington and adopted more of a show atmosphere.
Reiser joins the pantheon of performers at the gala, including comedians Rita Rudner and Paula Poundstone. Berkshire native Arlo Guthrie has headlined the event as well.
The actor also appeared in the 1986 smash hit "Aliens." He can be seen in the Amazon streaming television series "Red Oaks," and has a number of films coming out in the next year, including "In the Darkness" with occasional Berkshire visitor Kevin Bacon.
This year's gala will have the tagline, "Gotta Have Heart." There will be a video presentation on cardiovascular health, introduced by guest MC state Rep. William "Smitty" Pignatelli, D-Lenox.
There's also a common thread of the country of Italy in the event. The food, catered by The Marketplace, will be Italian influenced.
And there will be a drawing for a trip to Sorrento as a part of honorary gala co-chairman Gene Dellea's annual "Trips to Italy" series. Dellea is president of Fairview Hospital and Berkshire Medical Center's Hillcrest Campus.
There are 25 members of the community involved in the event, Smith said. They are drawn from all facets of the southern Berkshire community. Full-time and part-time residents, alike, work to make the gala a success and act as "advocates and ambassadors for the hospital" year-round.
"We couldn't do it without the community's support," Smith said. "They've been supporting the hospital for over 100 years."
