NORTH ADAMS — A new interim principal is on the job at Drury High School, and he's already feeling right at home.

Assistant Principal Timothy Callahan has been tapped to succeed Amy Meehan, who left the post to become the new principal at Colegrove Park Elementary School earlier this summer.

"I'm obviously excited about the opportunity," Callahan said. "I feel prepared because I've been an administrator for the building in the last seven years, I've been helping to develop all of the things we're in the midst of."

An 18-year employee of the school, Callahan has been "intrinsically involved" in the its math and science initiatives as well as other programs, Superintendent Barbara Malkas said.

"At this point Drury has implemented some really great programs and has seen some incremental improvement from the initiatives they've started," Malkas said. "So I think what [the search committee members] were looking for is some continuity."

The job at Colegrove was left vacant after its principal, Shelley Fachini, left to become the district's new special education coordinator for early childhood.

Callahan takes over at Drury a little over a week before school opens.

"Not only is he a very bright and capable applicant, he also is aware of the strengths and the challenges that Drury is facing," Malkas said.

A full search for a permanent principal at Drury will be convened in January, with a search committee that will include representatives for parents and students.

The theme for this school year is "student voice," Callahan said.

"In my 18 years in the North Adams Public Schools, I have seen our high school evolve into a place where students are actively involved in their own educational choices, engaged in making progress toward mastery of rigorous standards by a supportive faculty, and encouraged to participate in a wide range of activities that will best prepare them for college and career," Callahan wrote in a new letter posted to the school's website.

Classes begin Sept. 7 for most Drury students, or Sept. 6 for those transferring from another school. Eighth-graders begin on Friday.
