WILLIAMSTOWN — Craftsmanship travels well and loyal customers don't seem to mind journeying a few extra miles to see his wares, according to local jeweler Atef Bolos.
Bolos moved his shop, Atef Fine Jeweler, from North Adams to at 292 Main St. in Williamstown in May.
"Many of my North Adams, Adams customers are coming over and I have met some new people as well," he said recently.
Setting up the shop required some work; Bolos installed overhead lighting and arranged cases and adorned the insides with a variety of precious metal designs. The shop is carpeted and gets plenty of soft natural light from the many windows, and that light creates a nice ambiance for shoppers, he noted.
There are 15 glass cases inside the spacious, well-lit store, all displaying gold, silver, diamond and precious and semi-precious gemstone jewelry. Bolos is a skilled craftsman and creates and repairs fine jewelry. The shop is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
An Atef Fine Jeweler Facebook page and aateffinejeweler.com website offer examples of his hand-created jewelry and some information about how the pieces are made.
He enjoys making custom jewelry for people and showed a photograph of a pair of dangle earrings created in 2015 for a customer's wife.
"I think she liked them," he said, smiling.
Bolos is Syrian-born and became a U.S. citizen in 2003.
He left the North Adams site after being told that renovations were planned for the building owned by Scarafoni Realty, he said. Bolos was encouraged to vacate so that the work could occur in an unencumbered way, he said.
He searched for a suitable site to relocate and finally found a location in a building owned by MountainOne Financial Services and managed by Moresi and Associates.
