OTIS >> A Tolland man was recently charged in the wake of a horrific head-on crash on Route 8 that hospitalized a Bristol, Conn. man last month.

According to Otis Police Chief Roberta Sarnacki, Alexander Deming, 18, of Tolland, was northbound on Route 8 at about 11:01 a.m. on Aug. 7. His vehicle crossed the center line and struck a motorcycle driven by Jeffrey Denier, 62, of Bristol, Conn.

Denier suffered severe injuries, including a broken leg and elbow, a brain injury and extensive damage to his right leg, according to a Facebook post by his son, Adam.

Denier was transported to Bay State Medical Center by Albany LifeFlight helicopter. He was in critical condition and spent several days in the intensive care unit, according to the post. His leg reportedly was amputated above the knee in the wake of the accident.

Sarnacki said Deming was charged with failure to stay within marked lanes. The Otis Police and Fire and Ambulance Service, as well as Sandisfield Police and Fire Departments all responded to the scene.
