PITTSFIELD — State Sen. Benjamin B. Downing has formally announced his endorsement of Democratic candidate Adam Hinds to succeed him when his term expires in January.
"Adam will come to the job well prepared to build relationships without sacrificing our core values or bending to special interests," Downing said in a prepared release. "That's who Adam is: committed to community, to bringing people together and to doing politics differently."
Downing cited Hinds' skills as a convener and coalition-builder in his decision.
"I've seen firsthand Adam's ability to bring people together to get things done," he wrote. "Whether founding Pittsfield Community Connection to intervene with at-risk youth before they turn to violence, or as the Executive Director of the Northern Berkshire Community Coalition working to create regional strategies to confront addiction, unemployment, and access to health, Adam knows how to take on the tough issues."
Downing announced earlier this year he would not seek re-election to a sixth two-year term representing the Berkshire, Hampshire, Franklin and Hampden district.
Hinds defeated Rinaldo Del Gallo, of Lenox, and Andrea Harrington, of Richmond, in last month's Democratic primary. He will face Republican Christine Canning, of Lanesborough, in a race for the Senate seat.
A Buckland native, Hinds attended the Mohawk Trail Regional District schools. He furthered his studies at Wesleyan University and the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts.
Another factor in Downing's decision to support Hinds was his familiarity with facilitating collaboration and dialogue between a diverse set of stakeholders.
"Through his experience working on negotiations with the United Nations in the Middle East, Adam has learned and lived the art of negotiation," he wrote. "I know from my own career on Beacon Hill how critical this skill is to success in the Legislature."
Downing and state Sen. President Stan Rosenberg will co-host a fundraiser in support of Hinds on Friday evening at the Country Club of Pittsfield. Information: adamhinds.org.
