NORTH ADAMS — First responders from Williamstown and North Adams quickly tracked down a lost hiker at Mount Greylock on Tuesday afternoon.
Officials were confident they would find the 64-year-old Fred Stokes, of Maryland. He had been separated from his group but ran into other hikers who were in communication with authorities. Stokes was uninjured.
"We got a call from a [Department of Conservation and Recreation] ranger to assist with the search of a missing hiker off the Money Brook trail," said North Adams Fire Director Stephen Meranti.
North Adams Fire and North Adams Ambulance established a command center on Notch Road and Williamstown Forest wardens approached from one side of the trail while North Adams Fire and Ambulance approached from the other. Stokes was aided by hikers Paul Plasse of Blanford and Gary Putnam of Jefferson, Meranti said.
The call came in at about 3:30 p.m. and he was found by about 5 p.m., when he received assistance from first responders. They made it out of the forest shortly before 6:30 p.m., according to Meranti.
