BOSTON (AP) - A Democratic state representative whose district includes parts of Medford and Somerville has declared his candidacy for the congressional seat currently held by U.S. Rep. Edward Markey.
State Rep. Carl Sciortino said he supports Markey's bid for the U.S. Senate seat left vacant by the departure of John Kerry to become secretary of state. The special election is scheduled for June 25.
If Markey is elected, he would have to resign his U.S. House seat, sparking another special election.
Fellow Democratic Congressman Stephen Lynch is also vying for Kerry's seat. The primary is set for April 30.
Sciortino was first elected to the Legislature in 2004 at the age of 25.
He co-authored a 2011 law designed to protect transgender people from discrimination in Massachusetts
