ANGOLA, Ind. -- Georgi Salant and her Williams College women’s golf teammates are leaders after the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament.
Salant shot an even-par 72 for a one-stroke lead over Rose Kelly of Illinois Wesleyan and Kelly Sweeney.
The Ephs shot a first-day 307, giving them a three-shot lead over 14-time Division III champion Methodist.
"We put ourselves in a good position today. Our team played with a good deal of confidence after we played as a group [Monday] in a practice round," Williams coach Erika DeSanty said in a release. "They all played solidly and they all felt good about scoring on the course."
Williams was the only team to place three golfers into the top 10. Joining Salant for Williams were Victoria Student and Shelby Shote. Student was tied for eighth at 76 and Shote was tied for 10th at 77.
Methodist’s top scorer was Loretta Giovannettone,w ho was tied for fourth at 2-over-par 74, while Jennifer Sullivan was tied for sixth at 76.
Starting on the 10th hole, Salant made the turn at 1-over-par. A bogey on the par-3 second put her at 2 over. But she rallied to finish to back nine at 1-under with a birdie on the 345-yard, par-3 ninth hole and completed her 18 with a 72.
NCAA tennis at Williams
WILLIAMSTOWN -- The Williams College tennis teams will play host this weekend to NCAA Division III regional tournaments.
The Williams women, who entered last week as the No.
The tournament begins on Friday, May 11 when Elizabethtown (Pa.) plays Endicott at 1 p.m. Williams plays the winner of that match on Saturday, May 12, at 1:30. The regional final will be played on Sunday, May 13 at 3:30 p.m.
The Williams men also received a first-round bye for the tournament, which kicks off at 9:30 a.m. on May 11. Wilkes (Pa.) will play Stevens Institute of Technology (N.J.) at 8:30 on the 11th, while Farmingdale State (N.Y.) plays Drew (N.J.) at 11. The winner of the Farmindale/Drew match plays Williams on May 12 at 11 a.m. The men’s regional championship will be played on May 13 at noon.
The winners advance to the Division III national quarterfinals starting Monday, May 21, at Cary, N.C.

PITTSFIELD -- The Generals needed just one win to clinch the match because the Blue Devils forfeited both doubles points. The Generals swept the singles, with both Tom Cimini and Brian Desrosiers winning in 12 straight games.
