It was a long winter for area golfers, but the wait is finally over, as most of Berkshire County's courses are either open or on the verge of opening.

Cranwell Resort, Skyline Country Club and GEAA all opened for play on Wednesday, and Pontoosuc Lake Country Club and Waubeeka Golf Links are expected to open today.

Greenock Country Club, Egremont Country Club, Wyantenuck Country Club, Forest Park Country Club, Bas Ridge Golf Course, Berkshire Hills Country Club and Stockbridge Golf Club opened either last week or earlier this week.

Perhaps the happiest golfers, along with longtime course superintendent Bruce Packard, are at Stockbridge, which has endured late openings in recent years because of flooding from the Housatonic River. This year, the course weathered the winter beautifully and is dry.

The reports from throughout the county are that the courses all came out of the winter without major damage.

Meanwhile, the Country Club of Pittsfield is hoping to open nine holes to its members on Friday, and Taconic Golf Club also is expected to open Friday.

Wahconah Country Club and Donnybrook Country Club have yet to set an opening date.
