PITTSFIELD -- Two goals each from Cody O'Neil and Sam Thomason lifted St. Joseph into the Western Mass. tournament for the first time since 2008 with a 4-2 win over Hoosac Valley.
St. Joe coach Ben Kline said he was surprised he's gotten the Crusaders (9-6, 7-4 Berkshire County) into the postseason in only his second year as coach.
"It's a lot better than we thought we'd be doing," Kline said. "This is a big deal for me. I'm a St. Joe grad. I'm happy to get us back up to where we should be."

CHESHIRE -- It's not how it was drawn up, but that really doesn't matter.
Maeve Denning scored the most important goal in Hoosac Valley girls lacrosse history -- on a play that looked nothing like what co-coach Zach Sondrini drew up in a timeout -- pushing the Hurricanes to the program's first-ever varsity win, a 6-5 victory over Wahconah.
"That was not the play at all," Denning said with a gigantic smile. "I saw the opportunity and I just took it. I kind of felt like it was now or never. After not scoring all game, I was getting pretty frustrated. I was just in my own zone.
Denning took the ball from teammate Carlee Huttle and found some room straight up the middle in the Wahconah defense. She took what was given to her and finished the play, notching her first goal of the contest with just 2 minutes, 44 seconds left.
"I wanted the ball to go to Maeve and have her take it behind so they could run the play I just drew up," Sondrini said. "She just got the ball and saw and opening and took it. If it works out like this, then I'm OK with it."
