NORTH ADAMS -- Getting your big mistakes out of the way might be the mantra this season for the Drury High School football team.
With key mistakes stopping momentum, Greenfield seized its opportunities and used a stellar defensive and special teams effort to defeat Drury 36-6 Saturday afternoon.
Greenfield coach Mike Kuchieski was happy with his team’s opening weekend effort.
"Our kids stepped up and played pretty hard," he said. "We had some breakdowns defensively, but we had some kids stepping up and making some plays on special teams, and that helps out a lot."
Drury coach Bill Bryce said that his squad knew this was going to be a difficult test to open the season before moving to county play.
"Greenfield was a playoff team last season, and we knew this was going to be a tough matchup," he said.
The Green Wave started out the scoring early in the first quarter, as Jordan York blasted down the left side of the field with a 43 yard touchdown run, with a successful two-point conversion giving Greenfield an 8-0 lead.
After a 35 yard punt return by Brandon Koprowski bringing the Blue Devils deep in Greenfield territory, Kirby Bryce punched in a three yard run to the left to make it 8-6.
Greenfield would make it 14-6 late in the second quarter, capping a 70 yard drive with a Brayten Stack six yard touchdown run.
Drury would take the ball back and move it to midfield, but an aggressive decision by Bryce would prove costly. Going for the big play to end the first half, Kareen Beckett fired a pass down the middle of the field, but Greenfield senior captain Garrett Hudson picked it off and ran 70 yards to the end zone to give the Green Wave a 20-6 lead heading into the break.
Kuchieski sympathized with Coach Bryce’s decision.
"I probably would have done the same thing to try to get a big play and get some momentum going for the second half," he said.
The Green Wave continued to make noise with their special teams unit third, as Hudson would return a punt 70 yards for a touchdown, with a two-point conversion giving Greenfield a 28-6 lead.
The Blue Devils had another opportunity to gain momentum in the third, but yet another mistake proved costly. Just when it appeared that Bryce had broken off an 80 yard touchdown run to bring the Blue Devils within two scores, the play was called back due to a Drury offensive penalty.
Drury’s ground attack was paced by Brandon Koprowski, who rushed for 27 yards on ten carries.
