HAVERHILL -- Stockbridge Golf Club’s Jim Finnerty tied for best round of the day, shooting a 1-under 69, to finish in a tie for 11th place in the Massachusetts Senior Amateur Championship at Haverhill Country Club on Wednesday.
Finnerty finished a 7-over par 147 to finish five shots behind three golfers -- eventual champion Keith Smith (73-69), Jack Kearney (70-72) and Tom Bergeron (73-69).
Smith, a member at Franklin Country Club, won the title on the third hole of sudden death with a par that Kearney couldn’t match. Bergeron was eliminated on the second playoff hole.
Wyantenuck Country Club’s Andy Congdon, who won the South Carolina Senior Amateur Championship this spring, finished in a tie for 20th place with back-to-back rounds of 5-over 75.
Finnerty had a round that included two stretches of three birdies in four holes and was 3 under with three holes to play but made bogeys on Nos. 7 and 8 (he started on the back nine) to finish with his 69, a score that was only matched by Smith and Bergeron in the final round.
