NORTH ADAMS -- The Drury defense bottled up the Taconic offense Saturday, forcing three turnovers and allowing just 68 offensive yards in a 32-8 Blue Devil win.
Drury coach Bill Bryce said he was happy with how his defense handled its assignments, especially after a poor performance last week.
"We made some mistakes last week. We were undisciplined and we didn’t do our responsibilities," Bryce said. "So all week we drilled into our defense, responsibility, responsibility, responsibility. Don’t do your own thing."
Drury forced fumbles on Taconic’s first two drives. Both turnovers led to points by the Blue Devils.
The first score came on a Brandon Koprowski touchdown run, and was followed by a Kirby Bryce touchdown run, giving the Blue Devils a 12-0 lead with 4:25 left in the first quarter.
After a three-and-out from the Braves during the second quarter, quarterback Kareen Beckett took a quarterback sneak 11 yards to the end zone, carrying several Braves defenders with him in the process. The run gave his team a 20-0 lead at halftime.
Coming out of the half, the Blue Devil defense continued to put the clamps on the Braves.
Taconic quarterback Drew Scace tried to generate offense with his arm, but failed to get on the same page with his receivers.
After Kody Crosier added a rushing touchdown for Drury, putting his team up 26-0 in the fourth, Scace was intercepted by Becket.
Drury added a touchdown when Crosier picked up a fumble from a teammate and scored from 55 yards out.
Taconic wiped out Drury’s potential shutout with a Jake McNeice TD run with 2:13 left in the game.
Koprowski led the Blue Devils with 130 yards on 18 carries and a score. Bryce added 101 yards on the ground.
Koprowski credited his teammates for running hard Saturday.
"Our offense was really great today. We really pushed it. Nobody could bring us down. An awesome effort from everybody," Koprowski said.
Despite the poor rushing numbers from his team, Taconic coach Jim Ziter said the Braves will not get away from what they do best -- running the ball.
"They put a defense together to stop our off-tackle stuff," Ziter said. "I’m not giving up on our running. We’re a running football team and that’s what we’re going to do."
