NORTH ADAMS -- Six points allowed in two games. The McCann Tech football team will take it.
The Hornets allowed a last-minute touchdown, but improved to 2-0 with an 18-6 win over Mohawk on Saturday afternoon.
"It’s all about our confidence," Gustavo Montoya said. "We win this game, we get a whole week to rest. So then we come out strong again, and this just boosts our confidence."
The Hornets were 85 seconds away from their second straight shutout to open the season, but the Warriors found the end zone after converting a pair of fourth-and-7s.
The defense stiffened back up and denied the two-point conversion, though.
Gustavo Montoya said the defense’s motto is simple: "Swarm. We just got to swarm the ball. Everyone has to get to that ball because if one guy misses it, then we got to have another one right there after him."
Defense has not been a concern through the first two games for McCann. It’s put together a full 80 minutes and the stats tell it all.
In Week 1 against Pathfinder, the Hornets yielded 34 yards of offense. In Week 2 against Mohawk, they gave up 110. Combined, their opponents have rushed for 44 yards on 56 carries.
"They’re very physical," Mohawk coach Doug McCloud said. "And I knew they would be because I know their coach. ... I didn’t have my team prepped. I had a couple kids go down and I didn’t have us prepped enough."
Adam Dufur was a one-man wrecking crew against Pathfinder. It was a complete effort against Mohawk, with several players coming through with big plays.
Nick Lincoln set the tone on Mohawk’s first drive, coming up from his corner back spot to make a tackle for a two-yard loss on third-and-6, which forced a punt.
Dufur came through on Mohawk’s next drive with a sack for a loss of 12 on first down. The Warriors went three-and out, shanked the punt and set McCann up for its first points.
Billy Lincoln combined with Nick on Mohawk’s third series on a tackle for a seven-yard loss. Dufur hit replacement quarterback Billy Gray two plays later to force a fumble, which set up McCann’s second touchdown.
On and on it went.
"We’re a very, very physical team," McCann coach Bob LeClair said. "We’re big, pretty quick. I tell the kids we’re not fast, but we’re fast enough."
The defense has made life quite easy for the offense, which came out ready to play this week.
The Hornets battled severe personnel problems against Pathfinder, but much of that was resolved. It helped the Hornets climb out to a 16-0 lead with 5:32 left in the first half.
Brett Pecor plunged into the end zone from six yards out on the first play of the second quarter. It was his third carry in four plays, and he gained the final 20 yards of the 34-yard drive.
McCann doubled its lead on its next possession with Nick’s one-yard touchdown run. Levi Lawson set the Hornets up with first-and-goal from the 1 with his 36-yard jaunt on a reverse.
"We got used to it last game, so now we already knew what it felt like," Nick said. "It was easier for us to just come out hard, hit hard. We knew what we wanted to do."
Then the offense fell quiet. The defense was credited with the final two points, a safety on an attempted punt.
The yards and big plays still came for the offense, but it wasn’t able to string enough of them together to stay on the field.
With a bye week coming up, the focus will be on playing a full 40 minutes.
"Wanted a few more scores, although I’ll take this," LeClair said. "This is nice. Two hundred yards rushing, it’s always good for the kids."
