AGAWAM -- Getting to the Western Massachusetts Division I golf tournament was a goal for the Taconic and Pittsfield golf teams. Unfortunately for them, that was where their seasons ended.
Taconic finished 10th and Pittsfield 11th in the 12-team field. Taconic golfer Mitch Omelenchuck just missed making the state Division I tournament.
"He’ll use it as a learning experience," Taconic coach Mike Hillman said.
Omelenchuck finished at 9-over-par 81, tied with Justin Feldman of Longmeadow. The cutoff for individuals to qualify for the state tournament was 80.
Taconic’s score was 372 and Pittsfield finished two strokes back at 374. Longmeadow was the team champion with 320, beating Agawam by 13 strokes.
"We achieved our season goal of making Western Mass.," said Hillman. "We didn’t play as well as we would have liked. It’s a little different playing 18 instead of nine, but they’re used to playing golf. It takes a lot of focus to put together a good round in that that type of environment."
John Keegan shot 92 for Taconic while Brett Murphy shot 98, Ross Omelenchuck shot 101, Matt Ferris shot 103 and T-Bone Lingebach shot 110.
Mike Sarkis of East Longmeadow was the individual champion, shooting a 5-over-par 77. He beat five golfers by two shots.
Pittsfield coach Chris Polidoro said the Generals’ performance at Western Mass. didn’t meet their expectations.
"It was not as good as we wanted to," said Polidoro. "We’ve got five kids that are young."
Justin Martin had the best day for Pittsfield, shooting 88. Ryan Grande was next at 89, followed by Nick Martin’s 98, Austin O’Neill with 104 and Denis Cooney with 109.
