BENNINGTON, Vt. -- While the Mount Anthony Union swim team is one of the top two or three teams in the Berkshire County League, Wednesday just wasn't the Patriots' day for the girls against the Hoosac Valley Hurricanes.

It was a different story for the boys.

Mount Anthony split Wednesday's meet with Hoosac Valley, as the boys won 86-43 and the girls fell 113-57.

"I kind of figured that's the way it was going to go today," said MAU coach Anna Swierad. "[Hoosac] has some real horses and can mix and match to put them in the best spots to succeed."

The Hoosac Valley girls scored victories in every event, while Mount Anthony snagged seven runner-up finishes.

In the 200 medley relay, the team of Kate Ahearn, Emily Barlow, Jena Staab and Phebe Hall finished second, edging out the second Hoosac Valley relay by inches.

Other second-place finishes included Hall in the 200 individual medley and 500 freestyle, April Foley in the 50 free and Ahearn in the 100 free.

Both relays -- the 200 free and the 400 free -- scored second-place finishes, too.

For Hoosac Valley, Emma and Julia Whitney were the big winners with each earning three victories, either individually or as part of a relay.

"She has good, competitive swimmers. I have them too, but I don't have as many this year," Swierad said. "I'm upbeat. They did the best they could do."

Hoosac Valley coach Eryn Brewer said she was pleased with the result.

"I'm very happy. We had more [qualifying times] for Western Mass. times," Brewer said. "They had a great mindset, and it showed in their swimming."

On the boys side, Ryan Spencer was a part of three victories -- the 200 medley relay, the 200 free relay and the 200 IM.

Overall, the boys, who are dealing with some injuries, won six events.

"My boys have a good chance of winning the division," Swierad said. "We don't have a lot of boys, but that's OK. Ryan is coming back. He didn't win [any events] on Friday, so he wanted to win and came back strong."
