SALEM -- Todd Hunt got the be the hero for the MCLA men’s basketball team on Tuesday night.
Hunt’s basket with four seconds left gave the Trailblazers a 59-58 win over Salem State, handing the Vikings their first MASCAC conference loss.
Hunt, who had 17 points and seven rebounds for the Trailblazers (5-13, 2-4 in MASCAC) pulled his team to within a point at 58-57 when he scored on a put back with 49 seconds to play.
MCLA got a defensive stop and got the ball back from Salem (12-5, 5-1) with 16 seconds left.
Out of a time out, Paul Maurice drove to the basket and dished to Hunt, who scored on the reverse layup, giving the Trailblazers the victory.
John Jones had 18 points for MCLA and Andrew White had 18 for Salem
Williams 75, Castleton 62
CASTLETON, Vt. -- Duncan Robinson scored 14 of his game-high 20 points in the second half as 12th-ranked Williams pulled away to beat Castleton State 75-62 on Tuesday night.
Williams (15-3) needed a 3-point basket by Robinson with 29 seconds left in the first half to take a 32-29 halftime lead. The Ephs came out in the second half and outscored Castleton 11-2 and the Spartans (11-6) never caught up.
Green had 15 points for coach Paul Culpo’s Spartans.
Salem 71, MCLA women 61
SALEM -- In the first game of the MASCAC doubleheader, Rachael Carter scored 27 points and pulled down 10 rebounds as Salem State rallied in the second half for the win.
The Trailblazers (4-14, 0-6) used a 16-3 run midway through the first half to take a 22-18 lead. MCLA went into the locker room with a 33-31 lead on Courtney McLaughlin’s jumper.
Salem made its run just five minutes into the second half. Seven minutes later, the Vikings (8-11, 3-3) had outscored the Trailblazers 24-1, and the damage was done.
Brayleigh Hanlon had 13 points to lead MCLA, while Kaitlyn Chenevert had 11 and McLaughlin 10.
