TORRINGTON -- Pittsfield's bats broke out early and stayed hot through much of a 10-3 win over the Titans at Torrington's Fuessenich Park Sunday evening.
"It was a good win," said Suns manager Tom Conley. "We've struggled against Torrington and we're getting to the point where every win counts in a division as tight as this one."
The Suns and Titans started the evening tied for second place in the FCBL's West Division, a 11 2 games behind the Worcester Bravehearts. With the win, Pittsfield claims second, a game behind Worcester. Torrington slips to a tie for third with the Nashua Silver Knights, two games out, with about 15 games left in the regular season. Worcester's game with Wachusett was rained out.
The Suns stepped up in the first inning, taking advantage of a hit batter for their first run, then aired it out for five runs in the second with the help of a Torrington error and two walks by Titans' starter Zach LaRosa (4 innings, 5 earned runs, 8 hits, 3 strikeouts, 3 walks).
Meanwhile, Pittsfield lefty Jamin McCann (6 innings, 3 earned runs, 5 hits, 1 strikeout, 1 walk) gave up just three hits and a run in the first five innings.
"I felt good," said the Tennessee native spending his first summer in New England.
Despite the outcome, McCann said he wasn't at his best.
"He's a perfectionist," Conley said with a grin.
Leadoff hitter Dan Donahue (2 runs, RBI) scored Pittsfield's run in the first after getting hit by a pitch.
When Paul Cotler (walk), Luke Reynolds (single), Donahue (one-run error), Dan Cellucci (two-run single) and Tyler Bell (RBI double) all scored in the second, the glitter was gone for good.
Torrington scored a run in the third on a single by Anthony Capuano and an RBI double by R.J. Going and two more in the sixth on a hit by Chris Scura, walk to Langston Calhoun and two-run double by Matt Batten.
It was way too little and way too late.
Cotler put the game away for good in the top of the sixth with a three-run homer, his second in two games, just his third of the season.
"It's a lot easier to hit with a big lead," he smiled. "There's no pressure; you just wait for your pitch."
