GRANBY — Lenox received the highest seed of any boys soccer squad from Berkshire County for the upcoming Western Massachusetts tournament.
The Millionaires (11-5-2) were seeded second in the 13-team Western Mass Division IV tournament at yesterday's meeting at Granby Jr./Sr. High School. They'll play the winner of seventh-seeded Gateway and 10th-seeded Pioneer Valley Christian in the quarterfinal round. Lenox defeated both Gateway and third-seeded Westfield Tech, a potential opponent in the semifinals, this season.
"We accomplished a lot of goals this season as a team," Lenox coach David Pugh said. "We certainly can't overlook the upcoming games. Gateway is going to play hard if we play them and Westfield Tech, we handed them their only loss of the season. So we could have a rematch possibly down the road, if they can get past St. Joseph or McCann.
"Ever since that one loss we had against Greylock (4-1 on Oct. 6), we went 6-2-1 with our only loss to Pittsfield outside of the final game to Minnechaug," Pugh added. "So we've been on a pretty good roll since that loss to Greylock."
In addition to Lenox, there are three other Berkshire County teams that qualified in Division IV. Mount Everett (11-2-4) is seeded fifth, and it will play against 12th-seeded Ware in the first round at home on Wednesday.
There will also be an all-Berkshire County matchup in the first round, as sixth-seeded St. Joseph (10-1-5) will host 11th-seeded McCann Tech (8-7-3) on Wednesday. The winner will play against Westfield Tech in the quarterfinals.
Two Berkshire County squads qualified in the 10-team Western Mass Division III tournament, with Mount Greylock seeded third and Monument Mountain seventh.
The Mounties (10-5-1), who will host sixth-seeded Palmer in the quarterfinal round, made it to the Western Mass Division III tournament final last year where they lost to Belchertown in the 12th round of penalty kicks. Belchertown is the top seed this year, with a potential rematch between the squads in the final should each advance that far.
"With this year's team, I know it's cliche, right now we're just trying to figure out the problems presented to us," Mount Greylock coach Blair Dils said.
"I think we got away from our ball possession (in the 1-0 loss against Monument on Sunday)," Dils added about the team's most recent game. "That's one thing we're going to look to try and improve on. We're going to try and get into a bit of a flow offensively and create opportunities in the final third. We didn't convert on those on Sunday."
Meanwhile, the Spartans (7-6-4) will host 10th-seeded Putnam on Wednesday with the winner facing off with second-seeded Hampshire in the quarterfinals on the road. Monument's aforementioned victory over Greylock on Sunday locked up a berth.
Finally, in the 11-team Western Mass Division I tournament, Pittsfield received the number six seed. The Generals (11-3-4) will host 11th-seeded Chicopee Comp on Wednesday at 2 p.m. in first round action with the winner playing against third-seeded Amherst on the road in the quarterfinals.
The first round will be played on Wednesday with quarterfinal matchups set for either Friday or Saturday. The boys semifinal round is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 10 with sectional finals to be completed by Saturday, Nov. 14. The state semifinals will be played on Wednesday, Nov. 18 with the state championships on Saturday, Nov. 21.
