WESTHAMPTON >> The Monument Mountain boys soccer team is headed to the Division III semifinals after taking down Hampshire on penalty kicks on Friday evening.
The No. 7 Spartans and No. 2 Red Raiders played out a 1-1 tie after 100 minutes of soccer, Monument went on to advance with a 4-3 decision in the penalty shootout.
"We were on the bad side of penalty kicks two years ago against Greylock in the semifinal," Monument coach Matt Naventi told the Daily Hampshire Gazette. "It's the worst way for a team to go, especially a team of such great players like Hampshire. I hate it. But that's what it comes down to. It's the way it's got to end unfortunately and it's always terrible for one of the two teams."
Willie Serkin scored the winning kick for Monument, which now advances to play Palmer — which advanced in a penalty shootout against Mount Greylock — in the semifinals.

NO. 3 MOUNT GREYLOCK 0, NO. 6 PALMER 0 (PALMER ADVANCES ON PKS)
In Williamstown, the Mount Greylock boys soccer team put up a stellar defensive effort, but it wasn't enough as Palmer knocked the Mounties out of the Division III playoffs on penalty kicks.
The teams played scoreless for 100 minutes of soccer, then each side went three-for-three to start the penalty shootout. The Mounties nearly took the match in the fourth round when Cal Filson came up with a stop, but Greylock couldn't convert on its next two tries.
"It was one of our best defensive efforts of the year," Greylock coach Blair Dils said. "We kept a 30-goal scorer off the board. In those terms, it was a very good night for us defensively. We just didn't quite cash in on the opportunities on the offensive end."
