PITTSFIELD — The calendar may read November and Thanksgiving is only a week away, but for the Pittsfield Suns, it's time to think about baseball.
The Suns have unveiled their game schedule for the 2016 season, a season that begins on the road June 1.
"I love the schedule," new Pittsfield Suns general manager Kristen Huss said. "It's very evenly spread out. I think it's a good schedule for people to attend a lot of games. It's a good schedule to work."
The Suns open in Torrington on Wednesday, June 1, the first of 10 meetings with the West Division-rival Titans. The next night, Thursday, June 2, the Suns will open their fifth season at Wahconah Park when they host the Bristol Blues.
Game times this year have not changed. Weeknight and Saturday games start at 7 p.m, while Sunday games start at 5. The lone exception to that will be a morning game on Tuesday, June 7. The Suns and the league champion Worcester Bravehearts will be greeted by a ballpark full of elementary school students, and the ensuing chaos that brings with it.
The Suns will play 56 regular-season games, 28 of them at the old ballpark on Wahconah Street. The Suns have five Sunday, Friday and Saturday games, and four games on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
"Absolutely," said Huss when asked if the schedule fits in with her promotional plans. "We have a lot of [weekend] games, so I'm very excited."
The Futures League will once again have Mondays off, with one exception — The Suns will host Nashua on Monday, July 4, with a post-game fireworks display to mark Independence Day. It is the only game on the Futures League schedule for that day.
The Suns will be one of six teams to open the season on June 1. Nashua is at Seacoast and Bristol is at Wachusett in the other opening-night games. The entire league rolls into high gear the next night.
Pittsfield will play the Titans 10 times and will face the other three teams in the West Division — Worcester, Wachusett and Bristol — eight times each. Pittsfield will also play East Division teams Brockton, Martha's Vineyard, North Shore and Seacoast four times each. The Suns will face Nashua six times.
This year, there is a three-day All-Star break. The All-Star Game will be played in Worcester on Wednesday, July 13. The league is off Monday, July 11, and there is a second league-wide off day on that Tuesday.
The regular season ends on Saturday, Aug. 6, with the playoffs beginning right after. The two division winners will get a first-round bye while the next four best teams will play in a one-game wild card round. The winners will face the division champions in a best-of-three series, with the league championship series also best-of-three games.
