GREAT BARRINGTON — Behind five individual champions, the Taconic wrestling program won the Berkshire Holiday Tournament in style on Wednesday afternoon.
The Braves finished with 207.5 points to win, while second-place Maple Hill, N.Y. finished with 158.5 and third-place Hoosick Falls, N.Y. finished with 147.5.
"I thought they wrestled well," Taconic coach Jeremy Tetreault said. "When we were in the seeding meeting, we had a bunch of kids that were seeded first so the pressure was kind of on to wrestle like that. Some of the young guys stepped up."
Zabion Powell (132 pounds), Mason Papirio (138), Isiah Williams (152), Tanner Hastings (170) and Austin Houghtaling (182) all won individual championships to pace the Braves. Nick Bailey (145) and Marky Perras (160) finished second overall in their weight classes for the Braves.
The highlight match in the win for Taconic came through Papirio. Down 5-2 at the start of the third period against Ichabod Crane, N.Y.'s Brandon Gardner, Papirio turned the tides to take a 6-5 and then 8-7 lead, and in the final seconds with Gardner trying to get an escape to tie the match, Papirio got the pin to win by fall at 5 minutes, 59 seconds — one second before the horn.
"I mean, I was up by one point and I just knew I couldn't let him out or else we'd be in overtime," Papirio said. "I was pretty tired and I knew he was pretty tired. I knew I couldn't let him go, and it just happened — he fell to his back and I caught him in it."
Tetreault said that while the wins from Papirio, Williams and Houghtaling were nice, it was the wins by Powell and Hastings that left him surprised.
"Zabion Powell at 132, he's beaten seniors and kids I've seen here before," Tetreault said. "He's just a freshman coming up. I think he is making a name for himself. Tanner Hastings at 170, he's another kid that stepped up and won it today. He's a guy that's placed like third and fourth at tournaments, but never won."
Mount Greylock was just on the outside of the top three, finishing with 137 points, while Monument Mountain was fifth with 130 and Mount Everett finished eighth with 70.
The Mounties were led by two individual champions in Devin Pelletier (160) and Alex Griffis (195), and got runner-up finishes from Cayman Mead (152) and Hunter Abriel (220). Robert Sutter (120) and Dillon Whitley (132) finished third.
Griffis saw a familiar foe on the mat in the championship with Quabbin's Stephen Tremblay. The two stayed close through two periods, with Griffis up 4-2, but in the third Griffis turned it on for a 10-3 decision.
"Conditioning, mostly," Griffis said about what made the difference for him. "In practice my partner and I, Hunter Abriel, we go hard every day. We are preaching in practice [that in] third period if you have the most gas, you're going to win. No matter if he is beating you in the first, beating you in the second, if you have enough conditioning and heart, you can win in the third."
Monument Mountain did not have a wrestler in the championship matches, but the Spartans did get third-place finishes from Max Buffoni (106), Eli Jones (113), Dorian Page (126), Nathaniel Cormier (145), Steven Wool (170) and Bart Christiano (195).
For Mount Everett, Anthony Lupiani (106) and Pat Fosby (120) finished second, and Matt Lane (285) finished third.
Other individual champions included Hoosick Falls' Matt Laporte (99), Hoosick Falls' Gabe Fischer (106), Mount Anthony's Noah Call (113), Quabbin's Conor Thompson (120) — who was also named Most Outstanding Wrestler — Maple Hill's Bryan Kern (126), Mount Anthony's Zack Sauer (145), Hoosick Falls' Jake Pine (220) and Hoosick Falls' Alex Hull (285).
