NORTH ADAMS — It was a fairly easy Wednesday night for the MCLA women's basketball team.
The Trailblazers routed Fitchburg State 75-21 in the first game of a MASCAC conference doubleheader Wednesday night.
MCLA (10-6, 2-3 in MASCAC) jumped out to a 21-4 lead after one quarter, and held the Falcons to seven points in the second half. It was 20-2 before Fitchburg (0-16, 0-4) got back on the board.
Kayla Hotaling had a game-high 15 points and nine rebounds in only 21 minutes. Freshman Karina Mattera came off the bench to score 12 points in 20 minutes. It was Mattera's third consecutive double-figure game.
FITCHBURG 78, MCLA MEN 61
NORTH ADAMS >> A drive to the basket for two by Joe Wiggins with 3:09 left in the first half gave MCLA a lead against Fitchburg State. The Trailblazers maintained the lead to halftime.
However, the Falcons used a 14-2 run to open the second half and take the lead for keeps.
MCLA (4-11, 0-4) was led by Wiggins, who came off the bench to score a game-high 23 points in 22 minutes. Khalil Paul added 13 for the Trailblazers.
For Fitchburg (9-7, 3-1), Leonny Burgos had 15 points. He was one of four Falcons to score in double figures.
EPH HOCKEY MOVES UP
WILLIAMSTOWN >> As the Williams College men's hockey team prepares for a NESCAC conference weekend, coach Bill Kangas' Ephs have moved up into the top 10 in the national Division III rankings.
The Ephs (10-3-1), who knocked off Plattsburgh State and Manhattanville last weekend, moved from 11th to ninth in the latest USCHO.com national Top 15. In the latest D3hockey.com Top 15, Williams moved from 10th to eighth.
HONORS FOR AN EPH
DANBURY, CONN. >> Grace Weatherall of Williams was named the ECAC New England Division III track athlete of the week.
Weatherall won the 60-meter hurdles and the 60-meter dash, while finishing second in the long jump. Weatherall and the Ephs won their 31st consecutive Little Three track and field championship over the weekend.
ALUMNI QUALIFY FOR MARATHON
WILLIAMSTOWN >> Three former Williams runners have qualified for the U.S. Olympic marathon trials.
Rachel Hyland, Lauren Johnson and Lauren Philbrook will all run in the trials, Feb. 13, in Los Angeles.
Philbrook is the only one of the three who has competed in an Olympic trial. She was 39th in the 2012 trials in Houston.
WESTFIELD >> Lauren Carnevale had four points and four rebounds in nine minutes as Westfield State beat Salem State 102-61.
Lucy Barrett scored two points in 18 minutes for the Owls (11-5, 4-0 in MASCAC).
Jill Valley had 21 points to lead Westfield.
