CHESHIRE — The Pittsfield girls basketball team snapped Hoosac Valley's 45-game winning streak in the county with a 53-46 win in Cheshire on Thursday night.
The game was revenge for the Generals (11-3, 4-2), who were handed a 70-51 loss to the Hurricanes (14-2, 5-1) back on Jan. 5.
Bella Aitken led the way for Pittsfield, scoring a team-high 18 points. Of Aitken's 18, 16 of them came in the first and fourth quarters, where she had 8 in each frame. After one, Pittsfield led 21-12.
"[Aitken] really stepped up and made some big shots for them," Hoosac Valley coach Ron Wojcik said. "Our gameplan was to try and take [Peyton] Steinman away as much as possible. We talked about [Aitken] being the second option, but we didn't do a good job getting out to her."
Hoosac cut the deficit to four, 38-34, after three, but Pittsfield had just enough juice to hold off a fourth-quarter run.
Steinman had 11 in the win, as did Allie Hunt and Julia Eline-Wright. Hoosac Valley was led by Madi Ryan, who poured in a game-high 20 points, Kailynne Frederick added 12 in the loss.
The win makes it five straight for Pittsfield since it lost to Longmeadow at the Hoophall Classic. Hoosac Valley had a 12-game winning streak snapped.
"I think, frankly, they were a step ahead of us tonight," Wojcik said. "We were a step behind. I didn't think our aggressiveness on our traps and pressure off the ball was what it needed to be once we made Peyton give the ball up."
