LYNN — Madi Ryan scored 15 points for the Hoosac Valley girls basketball team, but the squad came up just short in a 54-52 loss against Martha's Vineyard at the Spartan Classic.
Lexi Mercier contributed 12 points while Fallon Field added 11 for the Hurricanes (15-5).
But it was Martha's Vineyard, behind 29 points from Erin Hill, that stormed back from a 34-21 halftime deficit to pull within one after three quarters.
"They just handled our press much better in the second half," Hoosac Valley coach Ron Wojcik said. "We forced 20 turnovers in the first half. They settled in, they had two bigs on the blocks, we had a tough time getting looks.
"It went back and forth in the fourth quarter. But their size was too much, there weren't second chances for us... I was much happier with our effort today. We came back [against Rockland on the first day of the tournament], but we dug ourselves a hole in that one."
Hoosac missed six free throws in the second half and eventually went down five late, before a 3-pointer pulled the team within two with six seconds left. However, the Hurricanes couldn't produce a steal.
Hoosac returns to action on Thursday at Monument Mountain.
