GREENSBORO, N.C. — Alicia Bazonski helped make a little history for the University of North Carolina-Greensboro softball team.

The sophomore from Sheffield was named the Southern Conference's pitcher of the month. She was joined by teammate Lindsay Thomas as the player of the month, making it the first time the Spartans had both honors in the same month. It is also the first time UNCG had the player and pitcher of the month in the same season.

Bazonski was 10-1 in March with a 0.77 earned-run average in 14 games. She held opponents to a .202 batting average and gave up seven earned runs in 63 2/3 innings. She struck out 42, tossed six complete games and had four shutouts.

Nationally, Bazonski is 34th in wins. During March, she was 8-1 at home.

Thomas hit .415 in March with nine home runs, seven doubles and 27 total hits. She had a slugging percentage of .938 and her OPS was 1.404.

Williams has 743.25 points, leading Washington-St. Louis (707.0), Amherst (589.50) and Tufts (550.0).

This marks the third time in the last four years that Williams led the standings after the winter season. in each of those three years, Williams ended the academic year with the Cup.


Points are awarded in the Learfield Directors' Cup based on team finishes at NCAA championships.

This winter, four Williams teams finished in the top seven in the nation. The women's swimming and diving team was third, the highest finish by any Williams team. The men's hockey team was fifth, men's swimming and diving was sixth while men's track and field was seventh.

NESCAC had four teams in the top 10 and five in the top 15. Middlebury was ninth and Bowdoin was 15th.
