WILLIAMSTOWN — There's an opening on the staff of Kevin App's Williams men's basketball team.

That's because Mick Hedgepeth, who has been with App since arriving at Williams two seasons ago, has been named the assistant coach for the men's basketball team at Division III Sewanee (Tenn.).

"It was a good opportunity for him," App said Thursday afternoon. "He and I can see him being a head coach some day.

"They have a new head coach there, who will give him a lot of responsibility."

Hedgepeth will be working for Bradley Pierson, who was hired as the head coach at Sewanee in April. Pierson replaced Bubba Smith, who moved up to a Division II head coaching job.

"I'm excited to announce Mick as our new assistant coach," Pierson said in a statement. "Mick will be a great resource for the student-athletes in our program, and understands the philosophy and mindset of Division III athletics. I'm excited to work with Mick, and feel very fortunate to have him on board."

Hedgepeth came to Williams two seasons ago. He was originally hired by former coach Mike Maker, who left to coach at Division I Marist.

At Williams under App, Hedgepeth was involved in scouting, recruiting and working with the Ephs on a daily basis.

The move has App's seal of approval.

"Being a young coach, I think it's important to learn from as many people as you can," said the Eph head coach, who is heading into his third season in the Purple Valley.

The Williams coach now has to find someone to join the staff as a second assistant with returnee Brian Emerson. App said that while there is no rush to bring someone on immediately, the head coach said he'd like to have someone on board for the summer to work the Williams camps and do some recruiting.

"I have a list of people to reach out to," said App. "We expect this with assistant coaches."
