The Western Massachusetts Individual Tennis Tournaments kick off today, with boys action beginning at the Longmeadow Tennis Courts while the girls will travel to Smith College in Northampton.
In total, there are five seeded individuals from Berkshire County and one seeded doubles team.
The girls side features the area's highest-seeded individual. Monument Mountain's Cara Freadman earned the No. 4 seed for the girls. Pittsfield's Anna Hamel (No. 9) and Lee's Ava Martin (No. 12) are the other two seeded girls in the singles bracket.
The top two seeds for the girls are last year's finalists. Defending champion Alison McCann of Amherst earned the No. 1 seed, while Minnechaug's Hailey Gurski is seeded No. 2. McCann beat Gurski 6-1, 6-1 in last year's championship match.
Rounding out the top four is Belchertown's Meghan Bernard at No. 3.
In doubles action, the Monument Mountain duo of Carly Sharfiroff and Haley Higgins earned the No. 5 seed. Neither of last year's doubles finalists are in the field this year. The top seeded doubles team is Minnechaug's Christine Mayotte and Sara Salerno, and the No. 2 team is Longmeadow's Cali Grincavitch and Sarah Hachadourian.
For the boys, there will be a new champion crowned in 2016. Two county boys earned seeds in the singles competition, with Monument's Kadin Sharfiroff earning the No. 5 seed while Pittsfield's Evan Dempsey earned the No. 9 seed.
The top seed this year is Longmeadow's Will Chen, who fell in the semifinals of last year's individual championships. No. 2 this year is Minnechaug's Matt Gurski, who also made it to the semifinals last season. No. 3 is Amherst's Andrew Zyskowski, and Northampton's Alex Zimbalist earned the No. 4 seed.
The top two doubles seeds went to the Longmeadow duo of Ben Schnieder and David Bogdanis at No. 1, and Amherst duo Nate Li and Dennis Shen at No. 2. Schnieder and Bogdanis won last year's doubles competition as the No. 4 seed.
Competition kicks off for the boys at 8:45 a.m., while the girls start at 9 a.m. Action will continue on Saturday, then resume again next weekend for the semifinals and championship matches.
