Four teams with Berkshire County connections finished in the top 25 in the 143-team field on Tuesday in the Massachusetts Golf Association's Four-Ball Championship at The Captains and Cranberry Valley golf courses on Cape Cod.
A pair of teams with a history of success in the event led the way for the county entrants by finishing in a tie for 18th place with a 4-under-par 140 total in the 36-hole best-ball event.
Berkshire Hills Country Club member Bob Linn and partner Jim Hosey (The Orchards), shot a 1-under 71 at Cranberry Valley while Stockbridge Golf Club's Jim Finnerty and Paul Murphy, a member of Charles River Country Club near Boston, combined for a 2-under 70 at Cranberry Valley. Linn and Hosey finished second in the 2014 event while Finnerty and Murphy won the title in 2010.
That left both teams seven shots behind the winning combination of Marc Forbes (Norton Country Club) and Bill Vine (Foxborough Country Club), who fired a 70 at Cranberry Valley to finish at 11-under 133.
Two other local teams finished in a tie for 25th at 3-under 141 -- Wyantenuck Country Club's Joe Grochmal and partner Dave Magdalenski (70-71) along with Taconic Golf Club's Ed Sennett and Bill Hadden (69-72). Both teams played Cranberry Valley on Tuesday.
Two other county teams didn't fare as well. Steve Terpak (Berkshire Hills CC) and Richard Tortolini (Cyprian Keyes Golf Club) tied for 65th at 2-over 146 while Ralph Dastoli (Berkshire Hills CC) and Mark Chylinski (Cranwell Spa and Golf Club) tied for 104th at 5-over 149.
