GREAT BARRINGTON >> The Monument Mountain baseball team did what it had to do on Friday, and also got a boost into the Western Massachusetts Division III tournament.
The Spartans needed two wins to qualify for the tournament and got both of them yesterday. Josh Zinberg picked up his first varsity win with five innings of shutout relief as the Spartans beat Drury 8-6. Monument needed this win because the Blue Devils (7-12) walked off with a win on Wednesday.
Monument was going to need to beat Lee today in a Berkshire Classic game in order to punch its ticket to the tournament. But the Wildcats forfeited the game, so Monument is 10-10 and will get to the postseason.
"We would have taken the challenge. It was out of our control," said Monument coach Tom Hankey. "We're just excited to get the win and move on to the tournament."
The Spartans broke open a 3-3 tie with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. The big hit of the frame was a two-run double by the Spartans' Zach Tinker.
Tinker and Tyler Wade each had two hits and two RBI for Monument. Matt Stewart had two hits for Drury.
"We're a young team," said Hankey. "Everything has been a process with this group."
The process will continue next week.
