TORRINGTON, CONN. — After falling into a five-run hole early, the Pittsfield Suns' offense erupted, leading to an 11-7 win over Torrington on the opening day of the Futures League season.
Torrington scored five times in the bottom of the first. Nick Lamberti drew a leadoff walk. Jose Negron followed with a single and Lamberti scored as Michael Purcell reached on a error. Mike Demartino plated two with a single and Mikey Arman added a two-run home run.
After a scoreless top of the second, Pittsfield scored in each of the next five innings.
Thomas Hughes' single plated Pittsfield native Kevin Donati for the Suns' first run of the game in the third. Al Zachary and Colin Gimblet hit solo home runs and Tyler Brosius scored on an error in the fourth. Zachary plated two more with a double in the fifth, putting the Suns up 6-5. Gimblet's double plated Zachary, putting the Suns up two after five,
Zachary drove in his third RBI with a single in the seventh. Eric Hamilton added a RBI single in the inning as well. Purcell had a home run in the eighth. Hughes' double in the ninth scored the Suns' final run.
Zachary led the offense with four hits and three RBI. Hughes had three hits and two RBI.
Jamin McCann earned the win, allowing three earned runs over five innings. Three Pittsfield relievers combined for four innings of two-run ball.
Pittsfield will host the Bristol Blues tonight in its home opener at 7 p.m.
